JANUARY 21, Thursday 6.30-7.30pm, Mark Vernon – The spiritual pursuit of the ancient philosophers
Ancient Greek philosophy was almost entirely unlike modern philosophy today. You find more continuity in the cloisters of monasteries or the consulting rooms of psychotherapists. Ancient philosophy was fundamentally a process of transformation, an awakening to a deeper perception of reality. The wisdom they sought was received more than proven; was as much practical as theoretical. This makes a huge difference to how you conceive of issues from reason and mind, to love and magic. The ancient philosophers lived in a plural world, much like ours. This tour of their insights suggests how we might diagnose crucial problems of today.
Mark Vernon is the author of The Idler Guide to Ancient Philosophy.
JANUARY 27, Wednesday 6.00-7.00pm, Alison Davies – Be Your Own Fairytale

She’s a regular columnist for Soul Spirit and Chat-its- Fate magazines, and writes pieces for Natural Health and a range of educational magazines. As a storyteller, she runs sessions on how stories can be used to enhance teaching and learning, and also leads workshops on how to tap into the power of stories for self-development. Be Your Own Fairytale is an inspiring and practical exploration of how we can tap into the deep-rooted and powerful symbolism of fairy tales to bring about positive change in every aspect of our lives.

FEBRUARY 4, Thursday 6.30-7.30pm, Frank Ra –BioHarmonizing & Abulafia’s Ecstatic Kabbalah
Frank Ra will start the evening sharing, in brief, his experience with BioHarmonizing, an approach to well-being and the title of his second book, which became a best-seller.
He will then move into the topic of his upcoming book: Abulafia’s Ecstatic Kabbalah. It is a little known fact that the kabbalist Abrahm Abulafia, through his 13th century manuscripts which were translated from Hebrew into Latin upon Pico Della Mirandola’s request, was a major influence on the Italian Renaissance. He is also credited, by the likes of Umberto Eco, with influencing Dante’s theory of language. Abulafia’s Ecstatic Meditations, and his writings, are pearls of wisdom which can help each of us to flourish and be creative.
Of all the gospel stories, the transfiguration has been one of the most difficult to understand. There are two current theories: either that it is an allegory or a misplaced post-resurrection account. Peter Cresswell analyses the text to show that neither is right. He finds that the story was, in its origins, a vital piece of lost narrative which has been buried for centuries within the text. This brings a new understanding of the first gospel, Mark. It was a tale of the coming of John the Baptist, as the reincarnated spirit of Elijah, and Jesus’ survival as a sign of the imminently expected Last Days.
