SEPTEMBER 7, Wednesday 6.00-7.00pm, Sasha Chaitow – A World of Mages and Fairies: Joséphin Péladan’s Initiation for the Masses
Immensely prolific, yet discredited during his lifetime, the symbolist author and visionary occultist Joséphin Péladan (Sâr Merodack, 1858-1918) constructed a vast yet coherent body of teachings in response to the social decadence he perceived in late 19th century French society. In his cycle of novels, La Décadence Latine, his characters represented archetypal ideals facing existential and metaphysical dilemmas against a background of a dying, corrupt, Western culture. Each of these symbolic stories had the purpose of inspiring his readers to seek a more ideal existence through a form of self-initiation that Peladan dubbed kaloprosopia: an art of transformation of personality through a life lived as a work of art. His theoretical esoteric works, Comment on Devient Mage and Comment on Devient Fée, respectively written for men and women, were handbooks for self-initiation that laid out the theory underpinning his novels. A formalised version of the same process formed the basis for his Rosicrucian order. By presenting the same idea in different forms; through art, literature, and more intellectually demanding writings, Péladan’s intent was to bring this call for regeneration to as wide an audience as possible, and in so doing, to spark a social renaissance. After a brief introduction to Peladan’s life, times, and writings, this talk will focus on his method for self initiation, the idea of kaloprosopia, and question its possible relevance to our time.
* This talk is based on an article published in The Pomegranate: International Journal of Pagan Studies, 2013.
SEPTEMBER 8, Thursday 6.30-7.30pm, Callum Cooper – Conversations with Ghosts
Dr Alex Tanous was a prolific scholar and acclaimed psychic of the latter part of the twentieth century. Having created quite a career for himself internationally, and commanding a great deal of respect amongst scholars and the general public, he spent nearly twenty years as an active researcher, and research participant, for the American Society for Psychical Research. Conversations with Ghosts was an idea for a fourth book for Dr Tanous, and it was intended to be written by Dr Karlis Osis and himself, outlining their various investigations of ghostly phenomena while working with the American Society for Psychical Research. The existing short manuscript – of no more than a couple of chapters – was archived by the Alex Tanous Foundation for Scientific Research, and left incomplete. Now, thanks to the Foundation’s support, the book has finally been completed using additional notes and writings of Dr Tanous, and interviews that were conducted with him on his thoughts and theories into ghosts and conscious survival beyond death. Additionally, this book provides not only a first-hand insight into the Tanous/Osis investigations, but also draws on people’s personal experiences with Dr Tanous during his various explorations of ghosts and hauntings. This is a rare insight into the work and mind of a psychic psychical researcher.
